INFORMATION FOR CLINICIANS
Supporting Singers Beyond the Clinic
A complementary educational resource for singers.
Clinical assessment, diagnosis and treatment are fundamental to safe and effective vocal care. For singers, however, there may be a gap between receiving clinical recommendations and applying them to the realities of singing, practice, rehearsal, performance, teaching and professional voice use.
This is where Vocal Habilitation Education can provide complementary support.
I work with singers to help them better understand their voice, explore how appropriate clinical recommendations may be applied within their singing and develop practical strategies that support sustainable voice use.
As a trained Vocal Habilitation Professional (VHP) and a member of Vocal Health Education UK, I work within a clearly defined non-clinical scope. My role is not to diagnose or treat, but to help singers make sense of their voice and translate appropriate guidance into their everyday singing and professional lives.
My Role
Helping singers develop greater awareness and understanding of their vocal function and the factors that may influence how their voice feels, functions, and responds to the demands placed upon it.
Optimising Vocal Function
Supporting singers to explore practical, appropriate strategies that may help them use their voice more effectively and efficiently within the demands of singing and speaking.
Building Sustainable Voice Use
Helping singers consider vocal load, pacing, recovery, practice, rehearsal, and performance, so that healthy and sustainable approaches can be integrated realistically into everyday life.
Translating Recommendations into Practice
Helping singers explore how appropriate clinical guidance can be applied to the practical realities of their singing, practice, rehearsal, and performance, without altering or overriding clinical advice.
Developing Self-Awareness and Agency
Supporting singers to recognise patterns, sensations, behaviours, and responses, enabling them to make more informed choices about their voice and its use.
Supporting Individual Goals
Working collaboratively with each singer to establish realistic and meaningful goals that reflect their individual needs, clinical guidance, and artistic, personal, or professional priorities.
If you are a clinician and would like to discuss a potential referral, complementary support for one of your singing patients, or my role and scope of practice as a Vocal Habilitation Professional, please get in touch.
