Meet the Director of The Singing Studio

My name is Kerry Hurley and I am proud to be the Director of The Singing Studio.

As a certified Voice Teacher and Vocal Habilitation Professional, I bring together voice training, vocal performance coaching, vocal health and vocal habilitation education to help singers develop a more informed, confident and sustainable relationship with their voice.

As part of my MA in Voice Pedagogy, I developed a bespoke Vocal Habilitation Education framework for singers, designed to support greater awareness, practical understanding, self-management and confidence. The framework supports singers experiencing vocal difficulties or changes, as well as those who simply want to better understand their voice and develop a more sustainable approach to singing.

At the heart of all my work is a focus on optimising vocal function and supporting sustainable voice use. I help singers better understand their voice, become active participants in their own development and explore how the way we use our voice, think about it and respond to its demands can influence our experience of singing.

Singers deserve to understand their voices - not just learn how to produce a particular sound.

My Story

From Singing Teacher to Vocal Habilitation Professional.

My interest in Vocal Habilitation grew from working with singers who were trying to make sense of changes in their voices - sometimes following vocal difficulties, sometimes after clinical investigation and sometimes simply because their voice no longer felt or behaved as expected.

I began to explore how singers could be better supported beyond traditional singing tuition, particularly through education, awareness and practical strategies for optimisation and sustainability.

This led me to train as a Vocal Habilitation Professional (Distinction) with Vocal Health Education UK and through my MA in Voice Pedagogy, to develop my Vocal Habilitation Education framework, now exclusive to my clients at The Singing Studio.

My work now sits at the intersection of voice training, vocal performance coaching, vocal health and Vocal Habilitation education, allowing me to support singers from both a technical and whole-person perspective.

My Approach

Education, Not Diagnosis.

The Singing Studio is an educational service, not a clinical one. There is an important distinction between helping someone understand and develop their voice and diagnosing or treating a medical voice disorder.

  • Voice Training focuses on singing technique, musicality, flexibility, performance skills and confidence.
  • Vocal Habilitation Education focuses on developing awareness, understanding and practical self-management around the voice and its demands, with an emphasis on optimising vocal function and supporting sustainable voice use.
  • Where clinical assessment or treatment is appropriate, I encourage singers to seek support from the relevant healthcare professional.
  • Where clinical care is already underway, I can help singers explore how appropriate recommendations may translate into the practical realities of singing, practice, rehearsal and performance.

My role is to provide singers with knowledge, practical tools and informed guidance while working within clear professional boundaries.

Whether you are a singer looking for support or a clinician interested in learning more about The Singing Studio, I would be delighted to hear from you.
